So You Want to Show in Canada

So, you want to cross the border and come show, eh. . .

Most U.S. citizens can travel freely to and from Canada, as long as you present the right paperwork at the border. A U.S. passport will serve as both proof of citizenship and identification. And, for those who meet the requirements, additional forms of identification that may also be acceptable:  U.S. Passport Cards, Enhanced Driver’s Licenses, Trusted Traveler Cards (Global Entry*, NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST) or Military Identification Cards (for members of the U.S. armed forces on official orders).

And you want to bring your dog (because showing works better that way):

Domestic or pet dogs may enter Canada if accompanied by a valid rabies vaccination certificate. A licensed veterinarian must issue the certificate in English or French and clearly identify the dog by breed, color, weight, etc.  The certificate must state that the pet is currently vaccinated against rabies and indicate the trade name of the rabies vaccine used,  including serial number and duration of validity (up to three years).  The vaccination will be considered valid for one year, unless otherwise indicated.

Checkmark on coming, what you need to enter:

At this point you can show by just paying an extra fee and listing your dog, however, you have thirty days to get an Event Registration Number to keep any points or qualifying scores you are destined to win.  The fee for an ERN $63.90, generally the listing fee per show is $10 + tax (total of $11.30 in Ontario) so it really pays to apply for the ERN beforehand (keep in mind, all prices are in Canadian dollars, presently it is discounted around 25% from the American dollar). You can apply for an Event Registration Number using the form:  https://www.ckc.ca/en/Files/Forms/Shows-Trials/Exhibitors/Event-Registration-Number-Application-Form-No-150

Remember, summer is a busy time at the CKC, it is better to apply for the ERN several weeks before entries close.

For those people (in Canada or coming from elsewhere) who have a Dalmatian but it is not registered, you can apply for a Performance Event Number that will allow you to compete in performance events.  This also applies to dogs with an AKC ILP number.  The fee for a PEN is also $63.90.
